First Day Of Gesture
3yr
Sylvester Strydom
Hello everyone. My name is Sylvester. I recently discovered Proko's Youtube channel and decided to start learning for his videos and stuff. I have never done gesture before so this is completely new to me. I just wanted to find out if I have the right idea with the gestures I did today. I probably did 30 poses but I'm only going to share two at the moment. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi @Sylvester Strydom these gesture studies are great! I wouldn't have been able to tell that this was your first time trying out gesture drawing. From what I can see, I think you are definitely getting the right idea with that second drawing. I like how you simplified the overall pose into one overarching curve, and I really like how you designed the shape of the legs to exaggerate the flow of the body. Like others have pointed out, I think you could have applied this same concept the to the first drawing. The contour of the right side of the figure (specifically where the torso meets the but) is killing the overall flow. You could have designed that line into one big sweeping shape to emphasize the gesture. The other thing I'm noticing in your images is your line quality. It looks like you're using smaller and more 'hesitant' lines (I think this is most apparent in the first drawing as well). One thing to keep in mind for your future exercises is to try to limit the amount of lines you use the express the pose. Try using more big, sweeping lines to emphasize the gesture. Additionally, I think it would be great to upload more than just 2 images next time. If you do a batch of 30, try uploading 10 of your best ones so that we can see if there are any patterns that we can address. Other than that though, great work! Hope this helps!

Hey there! Your main problem at the moment seems to be that your lines are very messy. While that wouldn't be a problem in certain styles, in gesture drawings clarity is super important. Try using big movements while drawing the lines, don't just work from your wrist, try to use your entire arm. That way you can lose the small "chicken scratches" and improve the quality of your drawings. Take care of your line economy, try using the least amount of lines you can to describe movements. For example on the first drawing, you can do the entire back with a single S curve. I hope I could help! Good luck on your journey!

Hi Sylvester! Good start, you're using nice curves. It looks like you're focusing a lot on the contours, rather than the flow/action of the pose. You don't need to show all the contours in gesture. Also practice bigger lines to get rid of the scratchiness. Don't worry about accuracy at this stage, you want to show energy and suggestion. Are these timed? A good way to focus is to set 30 sec or 1 minute timers to really get you thinking about the big movements and not capture detail. Be loose and messy :)

thank you for the advice. I do feel like I worry too much about the contours. I will be trying out 1 minute timers from now on
