Hello everyone. I just started the course and did the first exercise with a pear. I would appreciate any feedback! Sorry for the cropped shadow, I misjudged the placement on the page
Hi. This is a great effort. I would suggest a few things, however, you must know that I have never done the course “drawing basics”. I have done and taught courses like it and am guessing at the exercise . If my comments seem correct to you, take them, if not, you can discard them or hold them for further exercises. Firstly I would say, don’t be afraid to squint more and unify more. The greatest paintings in the world are built this way — squint at the pear, then draw or paint the unification of that squint with your eyes open. When I squint at the pear the shadow simplifies a bit more than you have indicted. What happens in your drawing from our perspective as viewers is the areas in the shadow that are lighter actually pop up into the light. This is not what you want. You want them to all stay in the shadow. So, draw in a tight squint. Second, the edge on the side of the light in your drawing is cut and defined. But instead, consider making the same value as the area of tone that it is a part of. This is a way of thinking that helps us understand the form of the object rather than the object as a linear cut out. If you don’t like that idea consider adding value to the background on that side that is the same value as the contour you described. That will make the line disappear and add the pear to atmosphere. The last thing I can say is that these planar drawing are good and helpful for seeing the structure of the object and creating form, but remember, every thing we see here is a lot softer than we think, so as you progress (which you will do quickly with more drawings), remember to keep all your edges soft — look at how soft the edges of that shadow are, it is so beautiful like we can see a gentle breath coming off the pear, that is how we want to try to draw it. Hope this is helpful for you. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for the feedback, it is very helpful!! I see what you mean, next time I'll keep that in mind
