Art envy

Daniel Prokudin
Hey all. I’ve been drawing for a few years now but still consider myself a beginner artist as I’ve not drawn too many complicated things. One thing that’s consistently been a struggle for me is being envious of others art/progress. Whenever I look at other people’s art, both in the assignments here and elsewhere, it often makes me feel inferior about my own art and often kills my motivation to draw. It’s especially prominent here because I see all these other people with amazing drawings and sketches, and it feels like they’re improving at lightning speed, but for me it feels like I’m learning at a snails pace, and in some cases even regress to how I used to draw years ago. I try replicating the techniques shown in the drawing basics course but I feel I can’t get those right either and it’s incredibly demotivating. If anyone has any advice I’d love to hear it.

Hey @Daniel Prokudin Every single artist you admire, or see posting work here or on social media, has been exactly where you are right now. We all experience the same doubts, frustration, impostor syndrome, and feelings of inferiority when we compare our work to artists who’ve been doing it way longer. The reality is drawing is a difficult skill, and it takes a very long time to develop real comfort and confidence with it. Don’t rush the process or expect mastery too quickly. If you still consider yourself a beginner, and you haven’t pushed yourself to draw more complicated subjects yet, that may actually be part of why your growth feels slow. Growth happens when you stretch beyond what feels comfortable. A lot of artists go through this once their eye starts developing faster than their hand. You begin to understand what “good” looks like before you’re fully able to produce it yourself. That gap can feel discouraging, but it’s completely normal. You’re probably improving more than you think it just doesn’t feel like it when you compare your work to others. Try not to compare your day-to-day practice to someone else’s highlight reel. People post their wins, not the piles and piles of rough sketches, failed drawings, and frustrating days behind them. Instead of turning comparison into discouragement, try turning it into study, or practice. Rather than asking, “Why am I not this good yet?” ask, “What do I admire about this piece, and what can I learn from it?” Then get back to drawing, and try to enjoy the process a little. Consistency matters far more than speed, if you consistently show up for your studies, or even just to doodle in your sketchbook every day, you'll eventually see progress. I hope this helps.
