Any tips for building a maquette for rough reference?

Hello Proko Land! I've been trying to get more serious about tackling personal projects along with the more 'academic/course focus' drawing but per usual I am constantly reminded... that I don't know how to draw! So I figured maybe building a crude maquette that I can photograph may help? Maybe? I want to draw a scene from one of favorite books as a kid. The Doom Brigade. It's going to feature the Giant half man/half lizard creature in a contest of tug-o-war over a book with a dwarf. Being much taller and stronger the scaly creature attempts to shake the dwarf from the tome. I know I want a tight over the shoulder shot of the Dragon as he lifts up the book with the dwarf bulging eyes on the other side. So my plan is to build a rough sculpture of the two, print out the interior of a hobbit hole tape that to some poster board and then pose the figures in front of it, so I can photograph it so the composition looks roughly to what I see in my head... which I can not for the life of me thumbnail. I don't need it to look pretty, just functional enough. Has anyone here tired something like this? Any pitfalls or things I should look out for? I spent maybe 20 bucks on supplies. Some wire, foil, tape, clay and a dollar store, toy whale... that will be decapitated and used for the dragons head (sorry Shamu! You're noble sacrifice... will most likely me in vain) Thanks for any thoughts and comments.

Gurney to the rescue! https://youtu.be/IHTsQdVZyg4?si=kr3j2A34PAqT96Lx Also here's a Scott Flander's livestream sculpting demo where you can see his process https://www.proko.com/lesson/figure-sculpting-with-scott-flanders-livestream I think you're going about it the right way! Repurpose as much as you can, and have fun! Taking your own reference photos is a great way to start working on your composition. Lookin forward to seeing what you come up with!
