Abstract graphite ideas

What's up y'all?! I started playing with this figure study yesterday. But as usual, I was too excited to play with ideas and didn't do any thumbnailing. I think I'll scan it into procreate and play with some ideas. I'd like to do some sort of abstract background thing. Anybody have any techniques or know of any resources for developing abstract stuff in graphite. Is there like graphite powder or something that I could brush on? Bristle brush I assume? Probably could erase into it... Am I on the right track? Other ideas to play with? Thank you!

Hi Tim. Abstract backgrounds are fun but tricky! I use them a lot in my charcoal life drawings. As far as material, a graphite stick might be your friend here. Graphite is always a little tricky for these sort of renders because it is harder to get REALLY dark darks. When I think of backgrounds, there are a few things I consider: 1) do I want it solid, geometric, or organic. 2) How do I want my values? Dark against dark, or Dark against light? I've included a quick draw over to show what I am thinking. One of the masters of this (again in charcoal but I think the idea transfers to graphite too) is Patrick J Jones. He has a bunch of courses here on Proko to check out. Nice drawing btw. Cheers!
