I don't really know what I'm doing wrong. Maybe opting for better pencil might help.

Nice work. I think you did a good job at pulling out values from a very subtle range in the banana. My hunch is it will look better if you don't rely on the lines to divide the values. Lighter lines to divide could help. But... I also think it's a very hard shape to capture so I wouldn't be too hard on yourself.

Here's my two attempts. I'm only using a single pencil as I am a designer and attempting to find out how I can use few tools and work without erasing. First attempt 15 minutes. 2nd Attempt 20 minutes. My goal is to see how effective I can be at quickly representing complex shapes and shading. I also am using hatching rather than more traditional shading (as in Stan's demo) because I want to get better at that.
