Started really old in drawing and design, and now I teach others how to do that. Update: 2 weeks into concept art. Not bad.

thank you for bringing the work of Ragnar to my life.

Having a schedule is going to make you level up way faste, if you are focused on being technically proficient it’s a great idea. There’s potential in your gesture drawings that needs attention. I always recommend the Walt Stanchfeld books drawn to life. There is a ton of information in those two volumes about what a gesture is and how economy of line can get you to an optimal place we’re you don’t need too much detail to convey a clear pose. The second suggestion I’d like to add is to make sure you have a goal in mind, why do you want to study like this? And how long do you think you can manage to work in order to be proficient at what you want to do? Make time for exercise, rest and fun. This mentality of drawing fr the sake of drawing is NOT healthy in the long run.

Hi! I'm Roberto, I'm 39. Graduated in 2019 in animation and I've been practicing since to become a character designer. I know I started really old and age is a factor against me, but it's something I feel I could be good at professionally. My problem, is that the more I practice, the more I see my work getting weirder (maybe it's not that weird maybe it's a matter of practicing more fundamentals?), I think I don't really fit in the feature and tv animation market, and I'm a bit lost right now. I want to prepare my portfolio and focus on finding work, but not sure where to send it or where my current style would be well received. It's because of this that I can't decide on what ideas or concepts to work on my portfolio and I end up practicing my fundamentals a lot more than creating ideas and I see my goal getting farther and farther away. I definitely feel stuck. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

What would Marshall from today say to Marshall when he was starting out in art? What are the challenges and advantages of being a mature person still working as an artist? All I hear from the younger crowd are comments that are a lot like an athlete's mindset, and as I get older I'm not sure I want to be like that all the time... but I still want to be able to work. Love you guys.

I am trying to do all the assignments, using the 3D model as reference. Any feedback is appreciated.

Hi Andreia! this is solid! all the heads look similar. The only thing I can see is the line quality, it would help to have an even better read if the inside lines are lighter or thinner, or darken and thicken the outlines. Honestly I'm just nitpicking because it looks so good.

My first attempt at robo skelly in different views. Having this 3D model is super helpful.

Is it bad if I genuinely like my art? I always see that pretty much everyone hates their own art, and they are usually very hard on themselves, but I never really experienced it. I get these small impostor-syndrome vibes so I'm worried :'D

I think that the fact that you are asking yourself that, is enough to encourage you to seek more knowledge. I don’t think an artist has to suffer for their art at all.

Why is it so hard to be an intermediate artist? And how can you make sure you keep your morale up before you reach that industry standard quality?

Hi halbodude, I really like your line quality and the fact that you color coded your lines. Your proportions are really solid throughout all the heads you drew so be very proud of that!! There is still room for improvement in the perspective department. I would suggest turning a much simpler form, the cube is perfect for this. The logic of turning a cube in space is the exactly the same as turning the loomis head in space. Both have front, side, top and bottom planes. But! since the loomis head has ellipses and curvilinear shapes, the deegree of difficulty is a lot higher than the cube. I suggest turning the cube in space as a warm up exercise and come back to the loomis head, you will definitely see some improvement in a short amount of time.

I really like your construction it looks really solid! I also noticed your perspective has room for improvement. Be aware that when you turn the head to the right or the left, the distance between the mid line and the corner of the side plane is different, one side gets thinner until it dissapears when you reach the side position. Same thing happens with the ellipse of the side plane but that's something I also have problems with so don't be discouraged by this. If I could suggest one exercise to improve these things would be to take much simpler forms, like a cube and turn it in space. If you don't have a cube try with something you have at home like a tupperware or anything with front, side top and bottom planes. You don't have to spend a lot of time doing this, try doing it 10 minutes everyday and come back to the loomis head, I can assure you will see improvement in just a couple of months if you stay consistent. Hope that helps my friend!

I wish I didn't postpone drawing proper cylinders in space. It's the gateway to good drawing!!! I don't know what it is about drawabox but if I can't see a cool project next to the fundamentals I just zone out eventhough I know that the information in that site is what separates the pro's from the enthusiasts. I need to go now, I have a fever and the only cure is to draw cylinders in space!
