I was bored at work and just playing around. I know my perspective is probably off on the building and I never could get the nose right on my little porcupine. I am not sure if he looks too much like a porcupine. I did try putting more needles on him but that looked even worse so I erased them.

I couldn't decide on how to do the eyes for my character so I did a few different ones playing around. My thought was a cat of nobility sitting on a royal pillow. But then I got side tracked on how to express the eyes.

My attempts. I did misjudge the lay in of the robot girl and ended up making her a little too big.

I finally got around to doing the boots today. The shoe laces were a pain.

My day 3 drawing. I accidentally moved the light before taking the pic so proportions are off. But, then again, I know I would have been off on the proportions anyway 😆

This week I returned to the pear. Simplifying has felt very complicated so far. I've drawn the pear ten times and attempted the portrait twice, each time I've made a plan and followed the steps, but for some reason the result just doesn't look any different. Ever. Argh! So I've repeated the same mistakes over and over again, while the mistake remained a mystery to me.
This morning I watched Stan's pear drawing demo again, just listened and watched without drawing at the same time. I didn't really find the magical answer I was looking for, and went to work - 8 hours later I was driving home from work, and suddenly it hit me: so far, I've had all the values in the same pool, and I've not separated the shadows and the lights. I've not thought about which side of a refence is in shadow and which one in light (what?! Why haven't I?). In this assignment, I've just used four values all over a drawing, as pleases my eye, and how I see them in the reference I'm using.
But so. Ta-daa! This answer was indeed on the demo, it just took me a whole day to realize :D. Not sure if hearing Stan's voice and being enlightened by it while driving is safe, but I got home safely enough and, with the enlightenment, produced this simplifyed drawing of a pear. I THINK this one looks different than my previous ones, and I've maybe learned something. Awesome. What do you think?

I agree with you. I think you have rendered this pear with a lot more knowledge or enlightenment. :) The only critique I would say, and it really isn't a critique, but more of want Stan said about floating shapes. I do not feel you need the little shape where you added the darkest lightest value in with the second darkest shaded area. It actually pulls your eyes more to that area and is not needed for the simplification of your pear. But really great job with this pear!!!
