Hey Viradis, sorry for the delay! I did a quick paintover. A grungy shipyard has a lot of potential for interesting compositions but I tried to simply exaggerate your existing scene first. I think you were already onto how to improve this piece and it was just a matter of experimenting with it! I made the ship bigger to get the point across. You could keep the original composition, but it might just take more time to build interest in all that extra space. For most scenes you want a clear first read. Darkening the room helps the eye focus in on the ship interior and gives us more shapes to play with as we design the lighting. In a scene with a lot of static shapes like boxes, dynamic lighting would be my go to. My version is simple but I can imagine to push it further, I would try a strong diagonal light against interestingly stacked boxes. (I'm also wondering about what's inside the boxes- anything interesting would help liven up the context of the scene). A more subtle way to emphasize the path is through texture. Designing grungy stains or industrial type on walls and such is a way to use more elements we can compose and direct the viewer's eye. I added a piece that I think could help with "grungy shipyard." I think it's a great example of how to make boxes interesting- and I love the lighting here! It looks complicated but if you squint at it, you can see how simple yet captivating the primary light and dark shapes are! Anyway, nice job! I hope this helps!

Hi Josh! I am so genuinely sorry, I must have missed the comment notification a while back and saw this only recently. I wanted to thank you so much for your help. It has really helped me improve upon my approach to environment designs moving forward. I've taken your advice and have made some more interesting variations of cargo containers in my prop designs (to be used for the entirety of the film), and I've been doing some value studies from reference to practice more dynamic lighting. I will try to apply what I've learned from this painting to all my future background paintings for the film. Thank you sincerely and have a wonderful day!

Hi everyone! This is my first post on Proko 2.0 and I'm so excited to see this community grow! I'm an animation student working on my 2D senior thesis film, and I've just started visual development for my film. This is my first pass on the loading area of a spaceship where characters will be carrying crates inside the ship. I have a gut feeling the design and lighting are lacking, but I'm drawing a blank when it comes to ideas to make it better. I was looking for any feedback to correct technical errors I missed and really get the idea across that this is a grungy, dull (space)shipyard. I also want to emphasize the path the main character will take to walk inside the ship. (The character will turn their back on the camera and walk up the ramp into the ship with incidentals in the background.) Thank you so much in advance and have a great day!
