Im just wondering where this light on the road is coming from? I blew up this painting squinted my eye against this painting and put two fingers up to block that light in the right corner. Id get more values in the night sky. I know its a work in progress. Good start!

hi, the lighting on the road is artificial light from a light post or something. I have posted the final painting in the thread as well. thanks for your feedback

Create artworks, preferably oil-paintings (but any medium is allowed, particularly digital art is welcome), that depicts a scene at night. Some ideas include natural landscapes with the night sky, sky with the moon or any other urban or suburban composition at a night time. There's many different directions and themes one can go for, so definitely personalise your entry. Some moods that can be invoked include, for example, serenity, wonder or perhaps mystery. I will be creating some artworks inspired by this theme too, so I'll share them here, but of course they are there only for some reference and involvement. Prizes? I wish there was a way I could award at least a prize for the winner, but as is, there's no prizes. So this is more of a curating competition. Best of luck! Shared picture is a digitally stretched image (for various reasons this was the best I could do for getting a picture) of a work-in-progress oil-painting titled "Scenery by the Roadside at Dusk".

My own work for this contest. I'm not really sure if it is up to the scratch but I decided to post it here anyway, because I did do something related to it. I didn't use any reference material so its all based on my visual library. I hope you have a good time viewing the work! (I will certainly be doing more of this kind of work as it really is an exercise of its own kind, and almost ideal for working with composition of both values and colours. Also just very fun in general)

So for this contest, my brother wanted to try out the medium of painting, and I encouraged him to try gouache with watercolours. He is rather skilled with pencils and the like, but has not really painted much before. So this contest's entry is actually by my 11-year-old brother, Abdul-Ahad Zulfiqar: He used reference photos but only loosely and "for inspiration" :) I hope you have a good time viewing the work!

Hello, Here are my thumbnails for January 2022 Proko Challenge. It was quite difficult for me because usually I paint large format abstract landscapes. With this challenge, I was completely out of my comfort zone. I loved it. Congratulations to all! Thank you! Mado

you are well rounded because these are some good representational art pieces, that are also super small :D

Congratulations for all the winners, participants and the judges for this amazing competition. I enjoyed the judging and your kind and appropriately critical feedback, and over all it had a great vibe to it. I have won an impromptu award, so I'm incredibly grateful for that. However, I'm not sure how I'll be able to make use of this prize, as I didn't get any email, or any accessibility on this site. Nonetheless, thank you for making this happen.

"Beginning of a Snowball Fight", oil on canvas painting. I referenced an image (for the background and snowman) that I will attach later here. For some reason, i wanted to leave the audience with an sobering or ominous feeling from the scene, so hopefully this reflects some of that. I personally have never had any snowball fights, so i took this direction. I hope this piece does not get "vetoed" simply because in some way it does not live upto the "epicness" factor. Instead, i focused more on rendering the snow and snowmen, alongside the architecture and the figure's pose. I hope you have good time viewing my work. Thanks!

Epic snowball fight in watercolor. My strongest association with "epic" is "fantasy" but I also wanted the final piece to look as a "painting painting" rather than an illustration. Thank you for the challenge, I really enojoyed the process :) I wish you all an epic winter.

Oil-painting piece im working on for this month's challenge. Started the painting today, the 27th, but prepared for the process on the 26th with thumbnail sketches and colour sketches in my sketchbook. I did those in order to speed up my process to get the final painting and to ensure i dont have to solve problems when they get out of hand (e.g., when painting). Im excited to get it finished! Please let me know of your thoughts thus far. Thank you. Talal

This is really fantastic, the lighting on the jacket is particularly well done. I'm really liking the color choices too.

I can give you my own approach: i have done a handful of some really detailed landscapes in my watercolour/guache sketchbook that were based on photographs/real life, and one thing i learned was that as long as it looks good in the photo/original source, it will look alright in your work. However, most of the times, such detail does not even look good within the source, and hence in such cases, i'd say either eliminate the unnecessary detail or try to get some other composition of the scene/subject matter that seeks to either eliminate such detail/pattern or present it in a way that looks good to you. Another option is to represent that detail in an abstract form by simply copying the general patterns without painting every single branch as per the source, and this can make the process easier and hopefully you end up work that doesn't look excessively "detail-y". ^ I hope this has at least something of value to you. Good luck!

What is your favourite medium? What do you think about realism in oil painting? (seeing as how you are very good at representational/observational art)

Try Mark Carder's DrawMixPaint. He teaches alla-prima advance realism that is still brushy (like John Singer Seargent). You dont even have to enroll, his free art instruction on YouTube is enough to teach one the alla prima method of oil painiting.
