Hoping someone can tell me if my cross contour lines are facing the correct position? Still struggling with this.
Melanie Scearce
Yes, you have the right idea! The two things to consider are the position relative to the horizon line and the position relative to the viewer -- is the object straight up and down or is it moving towards or away from us? In this gif, notice that the middle contour line when the cylinder is in side view is completely flat. You can't see either side of it, but it rounds out as the cylinder tilts back in space. The width of the ellipse of the cross-section become wider the more an object points towards or away from the viewer. It might be useful to draw the full ellipse as practice. Try to make the edge that's not visible lighter so it's not confusing. It's a good exercise for pencil dexterity as well!

Looking for some advice. And I hope I am explaining this well. I understand the Y trick and having lines converge when going away from the Y. However, when doing exercises such as these hands, I don't always start with the Y when attaching one part of the digit to another. At times I ended up establishing my box and then the Y which required me to erase some lines and converge away from the Y that I established after the fact. Any advice on drawing these converging (or maybe diverging depending on how the box is initially established) when you cannot start with a Y?

#13 in particular threw my for a loop. I’m thinking the side plane (ear) is almost horizontal? I’ll keep working on this lesson. Maybe it will help me to eventually learn to draw faces…

I attempted this drawing from Hokusai. I loved the use of lines focusing on her dress. I did not add the feet or hands because, well I was worried I'd ruin my whole drawing with that attempt at this point.

Here is my submission for line weight. Love learning this new (to me) skill.

Had a lot of trouble with the toe of the boot and shoestrings in particular. Also showing the wrinkles in the boot leather.

Pre-demo. Yikes that is hard. I found the transition between darker to lighter difficult and knowing when the drawing is complete. Also visualizing the pair as a series of shapes.
