I like stories, whimsy, and portraits. I’m an avid collector of pretty rocks, books, and Dead Things. (Taxidermy, bugs, dried flowers, etc.)

This is my submission for this month's challenge; the mother of lemurs. :D I used the organic refs such as the leaves, grasshopper wings, fruit, but mostly the fluffy lemurs!

This is one of those "what brushes do you use" questions. Sorry. I use cheaper synthetic brushes because of their affordability, but they seem to "swallow" the paint and get bad buildup without leaving the paint on the painting like they are supposed to. I've seen that Rosamary and Co. are a favourite with some artists because they lay the paint down that you load on the brush like intended. What are some good brands, or styles of brushes that don't waste the paint like the cheaper ones do? Thank you!

Are there any recommendations on where to find good images for practice?

I always turn to Pinterest. I use the keywords "National Geographic Portraits" "People of the world" "portrait photography" and "Photography for artists"

here is a bit of my study for today, from going through the first couple videos. I tried to copy from pictures of my family members, then did tracings to see how close I was and tried to take notes of why they were off. Looking forward to improving!

Tracing over the references and comparing is a great idea!

A few attempts at this assignment using Pinterest photos as reference. Numbers 3,4, and 5 (especially 5) were tough to do. I think I need to spend more time on measurements there. Any feedback? Thank you in advance! (Hopefully the page is visible. My phone camera isn't the greatest.)

I will continue to fill out several pages. but here are my starts. I find it hard to get those ellipses to make sense! The more extreme angles are difficult as well. But I really enjoy drawing from the 3D model! Do the placement lines look right? I think a few are a bit wonky, but I can't pinpoint which yet. Any advice?

Hello Jeremy, I hope I'm not too late. My name is Lukas and I would love to work freelance as an illustrator doing art for card games such as MtG and many others. My biggest problem is finding work. I only did one commission so far. If you could please point out something I could get better at my work and maybe how should I approach clients when it comes to applying for a job. I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you for your time, Lukas

I especially like your 5th image with the wolves! The composition and storytelling is what spoke strongest to me. I'm no professional by any means, still in the student phase, so I'm just rephrasing what I've heard before: "One way to attract clients is to create work as if you are already working for the client of your dreams/ doing the work of your dreams." I've seen people start small independent projects they can get a following from, and this is the perfect time to start creating a zine, small artbook, or card deck and prints to have ready for when conventions open up again. I highly recommend listening to Bobby Chui's The Perfect Bait audiobook, free on youtube! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG55UXhEgZs

Asked for help
I've been trying myself at figure drawing (2min ones there) for a few days now yet I feel like I'm not improving much and sticking to the same mistakes. I've been trying my hardest to ignore contours and solely focus on the movement but it gets pretty difficult to figure out once the poses gets more "clustered". Any advice on how I could sort things out?

A tip: 1. keep it simple by using single sweeping lines. But before doing any of the 2 min figure drawings, fill a page of CSL lines to warm your hand. Use big sweeping lines with your elbow instead of your wrist. 2.study each pose and follow the larger gesture forms using your finger. Ignore the detail of muscle and bumps. 3. Finally, you can start putting pencil to paper but remember to focus on the main action lines of the body. Ignore the bumps and detail until you naturally start to speed up. Hope this helps! I am on the gesture journey as well. :)

Holi! I'm Kelly Ramírez, currently based in the lovely Ozarks in NW Arkansas, US, where I collect gems, crystal rocks, and all matter of neat dead things from the woods. I went to Memphis College of Art for two years before it shut down. I currently work as a librarian dying the day and become Smeagol zombie artist at night. I'm gleaning ad much as I can from online courses but sadly, I suck at being a principled student at home! Still, I have a few artworks that I'm not completely disgusted by. I've got a long way to go, and I'm excited for what Proko 2.0 has in store. And you guys!! This community is beautiful and amazing! I'm floored to be learning with so many talented people from around the world!
