Inspired by Stan's awkward sink I remembered a kitchen in an apartment I lived in once. It was the smallest, most awkward kitchen. There was no out/input in order to install a dishwasher so it was just placed there, half-way covering one of the doors to the room, which was an accordion-style sliding door. The dishwasher served as a counter to place a dishwasher rack, that I tried to draw here but it became a bit small... To top it off the kitchen walls were painted in a very intrusive signal red...

I'm not at the level I want to be at yet but here is my level 2 submission. (Need to incorporate a weekly quicksketch routine now and move on to perspective.) These are various lengths (5-8 mins) and mostly done with overhand grip. One of my main issues is that when I try to capture all the subtle curves my drawing starts becoming an outline study rather than a rhythms exercise. I feel I keep skipping back and forth between the two. When I try to shorten timings down the rhythms are not correct and when I give myself more time it becomes an outline study... It seems to me there are both simpler and more complex/detailed rhythms in the ebook, and the more complex ones become to 'representative' for me... I also feel like erasing lines ruins the flow so I rather place a new line or let the mistake be.

I'm thinking a lot about this too! Because I have drafted a sort of progress plan for my art journey and I feel like in the pace I'm moving I will not be able to do what I actually want to do before three years down the line! I do love the fact that the Drawing Basics is so huge though. I learn so much from it that I didn't even learn studying art and design in "real' schools before... It's crazy! It reminds me of this huge book that I'm reading and how intimidating the size can look. It is actually just three separate novels in one binding but I think just the size of it can be so overwhelming to some people :D I just focus on the fact that it's three separate novels and stop thinking about how much time it's going to take me. I actually also had almost a year long break from reading it. I studied a bit about Agile methodology recently and I found a few things that can be helpful for various aspects of life and that is to plan your activities in projects (sprints). Say you feel it's important to study from Loomis now, then you can plan you 'sprint' to for example 3-4 weeks where you only do that and put the Drawing Basics course to the side. The sprint length should be as long as you feel you need to level up on Loomis. I'm not being as strict about it as that, but I did actually just start a bit on the anatomy course just to get that ball rolling slowly, but my main focus is Drawing Basics. (In additions to everything else I have to do in life... :D) It's annoying that there's just too much to do and too little time...

I really love how thorough rhythms have been explained in this section. I was struggling to really comprehend the concept in the past. So here are my level 1 rhythms. Took it very slow at first and I think naturally my timings went from about 18 minutes in the beginning and down to about 10 as I practiced. Line quality is also an issue I feel as it can get messy trying to place the lines in the right place.

I like how these are turning out, but they're taking 10-15 minutes. The lesson mentions 5 minutes, and I feel like 10 minutes should be the max time I spend on one. I guess I'm making too many lines? Any tips on speeding up would be great! These are some more complex poses though

I think it's ok that you spend longer time now in the beginning, as long as you focus on the rhythms and not get tempted to work on details. (The lesson says at least 5 minutes.) I think your drawings are good as you focus on the larger shapes. So I'd say take the time you need to internalise the rhythms that we are showed in the lesson (or find your own). I think you're doing great. Maybe one thing you can try to do is making more confident lines and vary the strokes between straight lines and curves? I know it's a lot to think about at once, but just keep going!

I wasn't sure what reference to use for my revision of this class and then I remembered that there is this exercise for animators to basically bring a sac of flour to life. I thought this might be a good way to practice dynamic shapes - how to make a sack feel dynamic ;)

1-Musketeer: Not too bad in the face but mouth too high and the hat is way too wide on both sides. Problem at left cheek bone too... 2-soldier: Not too bad in the face I think. Nose is wrong, and again the hat is skewed. 3-girl: Mouth should be higher and to the left. Ear and neck on right side way too far towards the edge. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to make the drawing a mask like Proko does in the vids! I can't just drag or copy+paste the drawing onto the red layer as he does...! Frustrating but I just set the layer to 'Divide' on top of the reference and that worked well enough to check the measurements...

I feel like I could stay in this task for ever! Easy to get obsessed by trying to simplify shapes. I noticed that one challenge is to simplify and yet another is to make the character cute and cartoony (like Proko manages to do...) My portraits often ended up creepy or downright scary...! In any case it's been fun to practice seeing and drawing shapes.

Wow, really well done! I like how you have managed to vary the line weight in the first one in order to be appropriate for each part you are drawing. And also you managed to keep the lines very quick and rough on the third one whilst keeping the structure of the figure. The other two are also really good. You captured the quality of the originals.

Haha, these are great and made me laugh!! I think you got the hang of simplifying into shapes. I'm just getting started on this task now... It's tricky to stay with flat shapes and not make them 3D I think...
