hey so I have been in the cave for awhile, not posting anything... but here's some new progress on the doctor who project! really having a great time designing the characters more, and mainly working on a storyboard!! its still very rough right now buts its cool to get a sense for how it could be. need to refine it. But its supposed to be an intro for a animated doctor who series, kind of like the duck tales intro lol, in that it shows a bit of what its all about, traveling, going on adventures, running away from monsters! I had the idea of it cutting from one example adventure to the next, hopefully its apparent, or I need to make it clearer or create better transitions. would very much absolutely appreciate thoughts on this!! I actually signed up for the storyboard 2 class on brainstorm, so I really need to get more practice on storyboards and improve, any direction or thoughts on how to prepare for this would be very appreciated. thanks much here's the link to the storyboard since you can't post videos on here-https://imgur.com/a/W4QKA2t sorry the audio quality is horrendous, since this is a screen recording of a screen recorded audio haha.

Hey everybody, here’s some drawings for a little project I’ve been working quite a bit on, a new Doctor who! I’m a big fan of the show and there’s just so much you could do with the amazing premise of the series. I’m working on some story ideas I’ll hopefully do some rough storyboards for eventually, and i definitely want to learn more about story structure and all that awesome stuff.  for now I’ve mostly just been having fun trying to work on the characters. And of course a bit of the tardis, really want to work more on that since designing rooms and hard surface stuff in general is way out of my comfort zone, but there couldn’t be a funner thing to design! I’ve been trying to write down ideas for characters and story to go off of and build, so that’s progressing too.  Since I am a fan of the show I need to try hard not to make it super similar to what’s already been made haha, need to come up with some new ideas!! Character development! I’ve only been learning a little so far, but learning about story structure and character building is extremely interesting and I’ve come to see how essential it is, even if I don’t become a writer lol. And bill Perkins visual storytelling class I’ve been slowly going though on NMA has been awesome as well for learning all sorts of mind blowing composition knowledge! Good stuff. For the Tardis room I was trying to make it feel really spacious and focus on having very organic feeling shapes, hopefully give it an alien feel. Definitely need to do some more ideation in it,since there’s a lot of room to do something different, see all the different directions you could go. Also I need to work on not making all the same size shapes and sections, make more clear distinct big medium small. And I was trying to apply something I heard Steven Zapata talk about on designing rooms: never just make a box and put stuff in it. Think about different levels, interesting shapes and structures. Just thought it’d be a good idea to show some ideas I’ve been working on, I’d of course appreciate any thoughts thanks!

I love your work! Your figures have a playfulness to them that really lifts my spirits. Also, those shadow shapes in the last 3 slides are very satisfying. I can't wait to see what you do with that storyboarding course, I'd love to see the scenes and compositions you put these characters into. It's clear your grasp of 3D form and gesture is very solid. Nicely done! Not a critique really, I just enjoyed seeing your work. Thanks for sharing!

Hey everyone, I’ve compiled a stack of fun drawings and studies and wanted to post them, I think ill keep updating this new thread. I’d appreciate any crits or thoughts, since there are likely many things I miss that an outside opinion would be helpful in addressing! I’m looking to build skills for storyboarding so my next focus is going to be on an NMA course: Bill Perkins visual storytelling, I’ve started it and it’s totally awesome, really want to get serious at staying with it. I’ve been trying to implement more shadows and tones since that’s something I need to work on and tend to avoid, so thoughts on that would be great! I’ve just been trying to keep it simple with the lasso fill tool with 2 or 3 values, focusing on the shapes.  For the figure drawings my focus has mostly been on defining and simplifying anatomy, trying to implement more tone and shadows, and of course trying to get as solid of a gesture and construction as I can. I’d appreciate any thoughts thanks.

Hey I think this looks pretty good! the features are lined up and it looks like your thinking about the form/ the way the face is turning with the far eye going away from us and the face shape. What I would highly recommend to improve is to study how to construct the simple 3d forms of the head, here's how Micheal Hampton teaches how to break it down in the images. The point of doing this, even if your goal is to work in a more simplified style, is to be able to turn the form and make something 3-dimensionally sound. Particularly with faces its really important to understand the 3-dimensional construction of all the features, how they fit in relation to each other on the face, and the major plane changes on the surface of the face to be able to know what it will look like when the head turns. once you understand the more anatomical forms, you can simply them into a style since you still need the same principles for it to work. Understanding this stuff will help from flattening out drawings. hope this helps, and I highly recommend the book: figure drawing design and invention!

Those are awesome!! You can see the gesture perfectly in each single one and the lines are nice and loose (which in my opinion is how you capture the gesture so well). Really jealous, these kind of poses are the ones I struggle with more.

Wow thanks so much Carlos!🙌 I try and have fun keeping it energetic and loose.I love the complicated poses, I know for me sometimes drawing the same pose a few times helps to make sense of it.

Lol I appreciate it, I try to keep it loose but hopefully in a good way and not an overly sloppy way, it does happen though especially on traditional since I don’t have an undo button…

This is a really awesome thread of work!! I love to see that you have both expressive loose drawings and very well constructed out studies! You've done that excellently with these insect breakdowns! such solid structure in perspective! I'm trying to find that balance myself, and draw more of a variety of challenging things like you've done very well. fantastic 🙌

Anatomy Tracings
3yr
Here’s two of my most recent anatomy tracings from Scott Eaton’s class I thought I’d share. The one of the black statue has some problems I should take the time to fix, I believe I messed up the forearm, and I made the TFL and Sartorius too small for sure. it’s all starting to come together though! Any thoughts or crits on things I missed or messed up I would be thankful for!
Marcus
Here’s some of the more fun drawings I’ve been up to, basically a bunch of sketchbooking. A good amount are from imagination or are lightly referenced, but there are a lot of studies too. I had lots of fun making them, so I guess that’s what counts! Of course any thoughts or crits would be very gladly taken!
Marcus
Hey guys, I’ve built up a backlog of drawings and thought I needed to share them!! These are some of my recent figure drawings studies, right now I’m taking Scott Eaton’s anatomy class which has been great, but intense and lots of information no joke. I can already spot some anatomy mistakes in some of these drawings, but it’s certainly improving! Of course I would highly appreciate any and thoughts and crits.  As you’ll see I’ve been experimenting with warming up with some automatic drawing or whatever you call it, making scribbles without thinking about anything but making the lines flow, that just happens naturally, I’m striving to think as little as possible. it’s been super cool, I think it’s excellent training for building the intuitive subconscious side, and it loosens me up.

Here’s my older style of rendering, I don’t know which one is better
