Let’s try making something cool!

A house-move later and I’m finally starting to get in place and can get working again in my new home. Even though it has been just a couple of weeks, I feel somewhat rusty. Maybe I’m overthinking it. Anyway, robo beans. Sometimes I think it’s difficult to discern what planes should be visible and not. When I’m not really feeling it and can’t grasp why, I’m often showing the wrong planes, and switch afterwards. I think I got it right at least.

Hey Ken! I actually found an app that suits my needs a couple of days ago, and I’ve tried it out in my latest sessions. It’s “Quick Poses” on the App-store by Frederic Ruaudel. It pretty much does all the things I asked for in the first post. A little bit glitchy in split-screen on the iPad when you press it down to it’s smallest width; you can’t really progress from the config-screen and start your session; so you have to widen it first. But after you set it off there’s no problem with it. Don’t know if this post will be marked as “spam” or something but; no I’m not affiliated with the app in any way. I hope the mods doesn’t mind; it’s a useful tool I wanted to share with others.

Things get more difficult, real quick. Of course I want to make images that strives to look somewhat impressing, or at least presentable. But I feel it’s tough to do that with this exercise, without having a firm grip on mannequinization, proportions, measuring and some anatomy. For instance, I understood the seven bumps of the knee, but I have very little knowledge of exactly why and how they should be formed and arranged. But then again, those later concepts might be even more difficult to handle without having introduced where the landmarks should be first. Anyway, here are my studies for this lesson. Feedback is always appreciated!

Here is my gesture drawings from the quicksketch video. I have used a little more time, well about 3-5 min. Perhaps they are more contours than gestures, but it was fun and I am satisfied with my first try.

Hi Eva! I think there are contours in these drawings, however, the gestures underneath I find pleasing. What would happen if in your next run, you would skip all the details that isn’t adding to the gesture? Like the marks to define the ribcage in the first image, bottom left. It can be challenging to decide what is necessary and what is not. And one way I find helping is to limit my strokes. Try to push it down to as few lines as possible, without compromising the gesture. “If I reduce these 5 lines from the hip to the foot, does the pose still read the same?” I hope these thoughts are helpful, looking forward to see what comes next.

I face the same kind problem with simplifying the shapes as I do with gesture drawing. It’s a challenge to not think of the contour when drawing gestures, and with this exercise it’s a challenge to not make the shapes more complex than they have to. I realize I’m not using too many primitive forms here, but I want to post this anyway and come back to it later as I progress.

Maybe slightly off topic for the thread, but, it’s about optimizing your session of quick sketches. Like probably many others in here, I’ve bought some of the reference packs with Aaron, Seeka, Mallory and the rest. And they’re worth every penny. However, It’s quite a fidgety process of setting up a timer, picking out a photo, turn off the alarm when 30s has gone, back out of the photo, pick another one, rinse and repeat. It would be much better to automate it. And since it’s a pretty straightforward function I thought that there would be tons of apps that handles this. But, if you, like me, have tried finding an app on the App Store that does this, you’ve probably noticed it’s not that easy to find. Does anyone in here have any recommendations? What does your setup look like? I tried making a slideshow with the standard Images app but, it doesn’t cut it. At its slowest it switches after 10s, you can’t select multiple albums and no random order. Preferably you should be able to select a folder on your device, start a random slideshow without any effects with the images in that folder and subsequent folder. Time it however you want, pause, and skip. For everyone’s gain, give tips on apps on all devices. Personally I’m looking for a solution when working on an iPad. That would make my day!

Another bean post! Somewhat difficult to define the twist I think. Any feedback is welcome.

Gesture drawing is difficult! I keep finding myself being perhaps too concerned with the forms and contour and have to drag myself back to the movement of the pose. Afterwards I can look at them and feel that something’s off, but I can’t point my finger at how to improve them. Any help here would be very much appreciated. I’ll try and squeeze in some quick-sketches as I progress trough the course (for a second time. Seriously, even if life gets hectic, don’t snooze like I did for a year. A lot of info is pretty foggy as I get back to it.), and hopefully things will fall in place and I can make more informed decisions.
