I love how you're breaking this down into simplified shapes, my instructors never taught me that skill whilst I was getting my Visual Arts degree. I just went straight @ this assignment and paid attention to values and anatomy on my end. I'll have to try the trick or thumbnailing the portrait moving forward, looks like it may be a very useful skill to have available in my toolbox.

So I've already done the level 2 entry assignment. Maybe just find a new portrait with good values or redo the same assignment again to fix any trouble areas? I know I struggled w/ the eyes when I completed the assignment before the course began.

I think I'm going to try this again, I got the jist of it from my 1st attempt but I can see that I need to practice drawing some figures via PS b4 I give it another go. You're just using the hard round brush for sketching in PS correct?

Had to redraw the figure 5 times, and really hard to pay attention to blending. Feel like I could've gotten darker in a couple of spots but this came out pretty well.

So, I'm starting to figure out this sketch. I'll post it soon need to fine tune a couple things, my question here is w/ toning the canvas in PS. I've used the gradient tool, how do you get that sprayed look to the figure? Is there a function or set up you need to use?

I'll take a look @David Finch, just curious, how much further are we going in this course? Trying to balance time between your course and my Kubert School courses.

Definitely some good points there, especially on style and imposterism. I liked how you broke down the technical aspects of the basics to the uniqueness of style as well. Definitely looking forward to more from this course.

Just finished this up, I'm happy w/ it but if I need to redo the assignment w/ the image presented in this lecture I will. This was a tough image but I think I got what I needed.

I'll still use the traditional materials, but is it okay if I supplement them w/ digital ones also. I'm trying to conserve paper and pencils.

Getting close to finished, this image is tricky because it's got a lot of lit areas.

This is my second attempt at gray scale paiting. I had a lot of fun paiting this one.

Cleaned up the linework, just a few more touch ups than I'll start painting.

Asked for help
Brief update: I've been sketching hands a good bit and finally did some digitally that I'm pretty happy with at the moment. Granted, I had rendering and Ctrl + Z on my side in this scenario, but I still don't think I'd be able to do these when I posted originally. I'd love some critiques on how to further improve. (I'm not as happy with the top right one - I used the airbrush too much when more confident shadows would have created better dimensionality.)

Don't worry about the small detail whilst you're working out the form, focus on drawing the shapes. Draw through, a helpful tip I've gotten from Josiah Brooks(Jazza), is to focus on flat tops and bumpy bottoms. The fingers are cylinders and the base of the hand is more of a trapezoid shape. Hopefully that helps.

Just starting this assignment, I'll get the details sketched in a little more accurately later on this week.

I love this course David, just curious though are you teaching how to create an entire 20 page comic? I'm already taking story graphics and penciling from the Kubert School via correspondence. I'm getting critiques from them on my assignments, but if you'd ever love to give me critique on my storytelling or art I'd be more than happy to receive it.
