Awesome @David Schneider! I think the "cold" could be emphasized a little more by adding icicles or fur textures on some of the fabrics- but those are smaller details. I'm glad you focused on overall design.
I did a design-over where I kitbashed your existing drawings. I really just wanted to exaggerate silhouette since your structures look functional enough to me. There's a great opportunity to play around with negative shapes with how the buildings integrate into the bone as well. Really fun stuff here.
Also explore different scales!
It could be as simple as making the scale-guy smaller, but juxtaposing big shapes with smaller details can easily transform a personal hut into something more like a megastructure!

Hi people!
I want to add some props to my portfolio, so I created a brief for myself, namely
"A culture living in a harsh, cold environment, with very limited resources, where enormous remains of whale like creatures scatter the landscape. They use these as basis for their housing as well as "worship" them to some degree, as the bones provide shelter and resources for tools and so on."
These sketches are still rather rough, but I wanted to get the overall designs down first, before going into more detail.
Any suggestions, advice, feedback and ideas appreciated! Thanks and happy drawing :)

I have a pretty broad range of skills and don't want to focus on one specific thing, so I do environments as well as characters/creatures.
My goal at hand is to get a steady stream of freelance income, while my ultimate goal is creating card art for MTG.

Hi! I want to get started using Gouache, mainly for small life / outdoor studies. As I'm beginning, can you recommend a view pigments for a limited palette that would be good for starting out?
Also: Do you have any tips for an inexpensive, mobile easel that offers a practical setup for outdoor painting? Thank you, really looking forward to the stream! :)

Hey David,
I like what your doing, especially the figures. My suggestion is to find opportunities to pump up the gesture in your figures. You can give the whole body a cool gesture, and give the individual limbs a gesture also. It will give your figures a nice, fluid feel and will keep them from looking stiff. I hope its okay, I took a couple of your figures and did a draw over so you could see what I mean.

Working on my anatomy skills, mainly to be able to place characters and creatures (with modified anatomy) in my scenes in a believable way. So I'm not aiming for a fine art approach, more like a block-out I can understand and draw from imagination, to build up upon.

Hey David! You posted the first stone golem so thank you. I love seeing the exploration and great job on the finish. I know this is your own project so you must have had set ideas in mind for this guy- but I'm always an advocate for variation in exploration.
Especially for fantastical subjects like stone golems I think we'd be remiss not to explore what different silhouettes could look like based on different rock formations and foliage. I took some time to play with your shapes below. At first, I want to find fun shapes and push proportions. To take it further (I'd love to but I could work on stone golems forever) I would imagine different rocks and minerals to inspire both new silhouettes and internal details. There's so many different qualities of texture, pattern and form of rocks out there in the world!
I like paying homage to the classic stone golem but I would also take artistic liberties to push a few designs beyond it!
But again, it's your project and you know what fits best in your world- I'll always just tell people to explore either way. Great work!

Yea that was exactly the problem. I had a fixed idea in my mind and when I got there I just quit whereas I should have kept going to explore what else there could be. The approach to think about different kinds of rock is also very helpful, I'll keep that in mind and try to apply it more often!
Your designs are just incredible! I'll be modeling it in 3D next, at least a rough version as a base, so I might steal some of your ideas there ;) Thanks again for taking the time!

Holy moly! It looks great! Only thing I can spot is that all your thumbnails look pretty similar one to another. I'm really curious how you could push these shapes in different ways because the result looks amazing! AWESOME! :D

Yep, I shouldn't have stopped where I did but explored other possibilities, unfortunately I had a fixed image in my mind and when I had something resembling it that looked cool I quit. If you have the time it's probably always worth it to go that extra mile and see what's behind the next corner! I hope I can push it further with the next one :)

@David Schneider I love the design and the idea behind it! The only thing I'd say is that I can't see much variation from your silhoutte "D" to the last one. I feel like you could push your iterations way more and with your skill you could get to an even cooler and more interesting shape design!
I recommend you that you watch last Proko video with @Scott Flanders about his ideation process and how he iterates on an idea. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately I had a pretty fixed image of it in my mind and skipped the process of exploring other possibilities. Even for a personal project like this it's a wasted opportunity to create something unique and developed. I'll keep it in mind for the next one! :)

I love it, the lighting from the eye, really brings out the vegetation on top.
It would be cool to see maybe a flower or a birds nest on top, to show it's protecting something, although the light from its eye really does make it feel like its a sentry already.

I do like that during the procces you went more to a assymetric design but I feel like it could be even more eye popping if even more was put in, really go for more extreme shapes and maybe more negative space to make it stand on its own, a varaity of crystals or plants, maybe even some more artifacial constructs in the mix? or base it more on a certain enviroment to make it stand out more

Yea you're absolutely right. I had a fixed idea in my mind and since I wasn't going to create a piece of concept art, but just use it for my personal project, I explored a little and when I had on screen a pretty cool version of what I had in mind, I stopped.
And it's a pity since there would have been so much more I could have explored.

Hi people!
I started a new personal project, a loading screen showing a scene from a boss battle of a fictional game. So I obviously need a boss, a giant one, so I decided for a stone golem. The eye is his weak spot.
