So this is a portrait of Ellie from the Last of us 2 by Iliya Kuvshinov. I was long fascinated by his style so I thought this was a nice opportunity to take a closer look. I thought it was a good idea to trace the proportions and placement of the elements by putting a paper against my screen since I wanted to focus on the linework, which I did and it worked out alright. However, I feel like I focused too much on just 1:1 copying their line weight bit by bit after that rather than seeing a logic. Sure, where the light hits there are hardly any lines (the picture mainly uses differences in value rather than lines in these areas), where there is shadow there are more visible lines. A ton of lost lines in the light areas and in the hair too. Other than that, there is more black around the eyes (where the attention is supposed to go I guess). What is interesting is, that the rest of the face and pretty much the rest of the picture hardly has any prominent lines. There are a few but mostly in the shadow on the left side or towards the the shirt, away from the actual subject. I assume he inverted the logic and put some heavier strokes in less important areas so that the face where the light hits has hardly any heavy lines (except for the eyes) which then creates a lot of contrast around the eyes to draw the viewers focus there. Does that sound about right? I will probably do another few though since tracing the proportions from the original image felt a bit like cheating and I may have focused less on the actual studying part as a result.

I really like the varying line weight you use.

More Kley study (this is my 3rd day). Frst I roughly sketched with 2H pencil, then inked with Micron 0.3 & 0.5. Can't get the same feel of the pen strokes as his.

Frog: I messed up the proportions so I had to try to fix it (Artist: Eliza Ivanova) -> Pencil Two Characters (Artist: xray.alpha.charlie) -> Digital Manga Panel: (Aritst:Gege Akutami) -> Pen Digital felt the easiest to do. I really enjoyed the manga panel. Creating line weight with the pencil was really challenging. If anyone has any tips on that, I would appreciate it. Really fun project

Did this one digitally. Original art: cyarine. I only stuck to varying the thickness of the lines. Was very restricting but i kinda like it this way

I did this whole thin digitally. used a graphic tablet and felt really awkward. If you have any advice on tablet usage I'd appreciate it. I like how the hierarchy rhino turned out. Not so much the light and shadow rhino. Would appreciate feedback <3

Level 1: Hierarchy, Light & Shadow from Photo Reference Level 2: Light & Shadow from free angle, free subject with depth approach. I tried to apply the different approaches it on a little "Proko Comic". I hope you enjoy.

The flower looks really beatiful. The thick lines on the rhino look kinda messy. This might just be my view

I haven't really ever practiced line weight but here is my attempt of shadow/light and hierarchy of importance. This was challenging for me but good practice.

Looks really solid. I think you could have emphasized the thick lines even more in your shadow/light study

Looks really good. From a first glance though, I kinda miss variation. To my eye I only see bold lines and thin ones. Hope the feedback helps. Have a good one

Did a boxin kangaroo as sketch from imagination. Appreciate any feedback. The stuff in red are the "studies"

Here are mine - one with hierarchy of importance and one with light/shadow. Tracing was easy and fun and definitely allowed me to focus on my lines instead of just constantly trying to figure out proportions!

Both look really well done. cannot really complain about anything. Maybe you could try to add more weight to the thickest lines to add more to your hierarchy. But other than that I am impressed

was sketching and thought that I could implement lineweight based on hierarchy. Would appreciate any feedback.

Little Question about Line thicknesss: Do I create thick lines with one stroke by using the tip of the pencil or do I have to do multiple strokes to create "one" thick line? It is way easier digitally but I want to be able to do it with a regular pen as well

Hello! Here's my assignment. I definitely struggled with keeping my sketches loose. I also just watched the demo and I feel like I'm still a little bit confused when Stan says not to look at the edges but to visualize the whole thing and discover it. If anyone has more clarity, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!

When talks about the visualization thing, I think the goal is to imagine the actual 3d form as best as possible. The idea is to capture the form of the subject and not just contour the stuff you are seeing. It is a little abstract but it'll make sense once you focus on it it. for the hands especially you can use cross counter lines (e.g. basically ellipses around the finger) to indicate the 3d form. hope that helps

Tried to draw a bat from imagination. This was done before the demo. these are the refs. below are the sketches. the last image was the imagination drawing. this was really difficult for me, so I‘d appreciate any feedback
