I absolutely LOVE this conversation and all Marshall has to say, and probably for the entirely wrong reason. 3D and perspective are absolutely mind-boggling to me, especially rotating 3D objects in space. Marshall basically validates that it's a super complicated thing. 17-point perspective? That's how it ALL feels to me!!! Love it.

Attempt 1 at level 1. Definitely trickier than it looked in the quick demo video!

Maybe this #11 is better?

I am facing a challenge: my sketches after the demo are more static than before the demo. The reason I believe is that I used CSI and a "quick sketches" mindset before the demo and used short "scratchy" lines after the demo to try to replicate the interesting shapes Stan creates. Unfortunately - mine don't render as good as his. I feel like I can either draw movement with very basic shapes or static drawings with interesting shapes. Any tips on how to avoid making the confident CSI lines look static when adding the detailed shapes? Thanks!

YES! Same! When I try to focus on the interesting shapes and having the apexes at non-symmetrical places and whatnot, it has completely caused mine to either look "dead" or not like seals / sea lions at all. I'm guessing he'll say to keep redoing them. Yours have excellent lines and very interesting shapes!

Stan, when does breaking the form go to far when drawing gesture? I'm doing gesture practice on people and it feels like maybe i'm breaking the form to much and it starts to look ugly.

Hopefully Stan comments too, but I think he said in an earlier one that it's "too far" if it either no longer has the "function" (like, I assume, you can't even tell it's a seal or sea lion anymore), or it just looks badly done rather than an interesting design. Frankly all of mine look badly done so it's not like I can give you a great example but I think that's what he mentioned in one of the previous videos!

Tricky to think about shape design and not just following contours!!

Thank you Stan! Your critiques help me a lot! This time I tried to measure the big shapes, and eyeballing the rest details. And I feel more free and calm in these two new practices.(Also quicker then before) Thank you for taking my nerves away. Btw I used a Transparent ruler instead of a pencil to measure this time.

I've switched to using a transparent ruler too and doing a lot of math. I'm hoping not to need to do that forever as I like art because I don't want to do math!!

As a level I and a beginner, I found this a little overwhelming. Just trying to dredge up an artist I thought I had any chance of copying was a big challenge to start! And sorry to Marc Chagall, dude, but you looked the most copy-able for a beginner - so here was my very first-ever attempt - my focus being entirely on line value, thickness, etc. (and not proportions - because now that they're side by side, I can see that my lady would be buying a smaller bra size than Chagall's gal). I guess he was going for shadow with the darker thick lines? The dark lines are very dramatic and exaggerated.

Here are mine - one with hierarchy of importance and one with light/shadow. Tracing was easy and fun and definitely allowed me to focus on my lines instead of just constantly trying to figure out proportions!

Here are my sketches! I think I’m still a little stiff with my lines, and I follow the reference images too closely.

Here are mine. I never tried to sketch a hand before - they are tricky!
