LESSON NOTES

Create an Odd Bot!

Prompt

For this month’s challenge, we want you to create a sensationally strange robot! We’re talking about a truly Odd Bot that pushes the boundaries of design and your imagination. Using your preferred medium, loosen up and get your creative juices flowing in order to design an odd bot for the consideration of this month’s judge: professional artist and robot aficionado, Josh Sunga. Josh will judge entries based on fun shape design, interesting proportions, cohesiveness of idea and the overall "oddness" of your odd bot.

Medium: Any medium, traditional and digital, 2D and 3D is allowed.

Sponsored by Wacom, Sentient Academy,  Vision X Live Conference, Trekell, Canvy and Proko.

This challenge is closed for new submissions.

Now it's time to VOTE! One of the prizes is a Community Choice, so it's up to you to scroll through and UPVOTE your favorite submissions in the final submissions thread. You can upvote as many or as few as you'd like.

I started off with the random shape exercise - I thought that would've been a good strategy to get as odd a shape as possible. And I did find one... top row, third from the left.

and another quick sketch. It's funny that when you start sketching, you want to draw a really strange robot, in the end you always get something ordinary on four legs))

Hello everybody! I'm excited to participate in this challenge :D I would like that my design told a backstory of the robot, I feel I have to work on developing my composition and narrative skills. All comments are welcome n_n about the robots or advice on narrative. Saludos desde Chile!

Playing with shapes
Sean Ludwig
Before I actually start painting, here is my concept for a gel droid. The idea is that an amorphous gel with millions of carbon fiber nano bots in it can be programmed to make it's skeleton into any shape. The machine parts build air-tight floatation chambers around themselves to focus on movement, rather than holding itself upright. Tendrils connected to the surface of the gel maintain shape, and deliver air pressure for the floats, when needed. I'm still unsure about the shape, and may consider zooming out the composition to get a more unique profile. I was also considering just playing with opacity of layers in photoshop for the translucence effect, but now leaning towards straight up using opaque brush strokes throughout.
@meebutstronger
Love this idea, very whacky biomechy vibe
