How to Paint a Dog Portrait – Helping Animal Shelters
In collaboration with San Diego Humane Society and Arts for Barks, I painted a portrait of an overlooked dog as an incentive for people to adopt it. The new parents get to keep the painting. In this video I’ll take you through my experience at the shelter and then I’ll let you watch over my shoulder as I do the painting.

Update: The dog I painted was adopted shortly after I made this and is loving her new family. However, there are many other pets out there that need a new home. If you’re considering getting a furry friend, check out your local shelter. There are a ton of great animals out there waiting for a family.

You are a wonderful person and an inspiration. I have 4 dogs and have been learning to draw on and off for many years. I really enjoy your teaching videos and text. Thank you for trying to help these deserving canine friends and thank you for helping us humans.
Love this. xoxo You have inspired me to do something like this up here in the Bay Area and help out some of the dogs that need help 🙂
Thank you!
Very inspiring. Love the demonstration and I feel I need to lighten up on my detail and practice ,practice and practice more. Was the painting oil or acrylic?
Stan used oil paints on this one.
What a beautiful video and stunning painting! Thank you so much for helping Tora find her forever home. This is a topic that is near and dear to me as my oldest girl, Marley, was adopted from our local humane society. I also received the most incredible prize a few years ago and won a portrait painting of my two girls as part of a fundraiser. I would love some day to be able to help my local humane society in a similar fashion. I really appreciated hearing the thought process that helped you capture the essence of the photo and convey Tora’s personality without trying to replicate it.
Really enjoyed this video!
O g that’s so amazing I want to do this….thank you for sharing…I’m an avid dog, horse, animals period lover…what a great thing to do to get these beautiful fur babies adopted.
