6 Weeks • Live Online • Weekly Critiques & Q&A

January 27th to March 6th

Join me for a focused, 6-week creature design workshop. Each week we’ll meet live for 2 hours to unleash your inner creature designer! The theme for this workshop is Ice Age Monsters. Together we'll explore our creature designs through the process of sketching, silhouettes, shapecarving, lateral iteration, photobashing, AND even some traditional sculpting! Digital modelers and sculptors are welcome too. Our goal is to design monsters that feel functional, informed, and impactful. Even a bit horrifying.

What You’ll Get

  • Weekly Live Sessions (2 hrs each): Part lecture, part demo. Homework Assignments will be issued at every class meeting.

  • Direct Feedback: Submit your work and get a constructive critique (Participation Seat)

  • Community: Learn alongside other motivated artists

Participation vs Audit Seats

  • Participation Seats (Live meetings on Tuesdays): These include personalized critiques, guided exercises, and open Q&A.

  • Audit Seat: Follow along with the Lessons and assignments, however your artwork will not receive critique from the instructor.

Schedule

  • 6 weeks total

  • 2 hours / week (live on Discord)

  • (Tuesdays) January 27th to March 6th at 10:00 AM to 12PM PST

Each week you’ll get lectures, demos, and structured homework that walk you through the process of designing your creature. Shape design, animal anatomy, storytelling, gameplay functionality, and iteration. You’ll meet with your instructor and classmates every Tuesday in a private Discord, so you can stay connected and maintain your momentum. Participation Seats receive recorded feedback each week that you can use to help you refine your design.

This workshop is meant to push your creative decision making and help you to design monsters based on compelling ideas, and convincing structure. Critique spots are limited so you can get focused, useful feedback.

Students will have permanent access to all Lessons and downloads from this workshop, as well as permanent access to the Shapecarver Discord.

Let's make some monsters.

What you will learn
1Week 1 - Intro to Paleo Art, Pleistocene Megafauna, and Moodboards
Learn about some of the greatest paleo-artists in history. Their work is a valuable reference for all of us, and will help to inspire our Ice Age monster designs. We'll also learn about Ice Age megafauna that you can study and use as reference. These are the building blocks from which you will construct your Ice Age monstrosity.
2Week 2 - Designing with Silhouette, Shapecarving, Photobashing, and Lateral Iteration
Try a unique approach to photobashing that is fast, fun, and which builds upon your shapecarving techniques. Learn how to explore ideas quickly and efficiently, while creating a visually exciting array of options. Presenting your ideas effectively is just as dependent on style and emotional impact, as it is about problem solving.
3Week 3 - Building Armatures, Posing, Gesture, and the Anatomical Block-in
A structurally sound armature can make a big difference when it comes to sculpting monsters. You'll learn all about the materials and techniques which are necessary in order to construct a sturdy scaffolding for your creature sculpture. Then we'll use our moodboards, sketches, and artwork to guide us as we begin to build out mutated BUT convincing anatomical forms. You'll also learn more about clay and other sculpting materials.
4Week 4 - Developing Secondary Forms, Blending, Detailing, and Refining
You won't want to miss this segment. These are some of the most important steps for making your sculpture feel detailed and finished. I'll even show you how to make your own detailing tools so you can render your sculptures to whatever level of finish you desire.
5Week 5 - Finishing Your Creature Sculpture
We'll be dedicating our meeting this week to troubleshooting and addressing feedback. Sculpting traditionally is a challenging but incredibly rewarding process, and we will need this session to insure we all create successful sculptures.
6Week 6 - Painting & Presentation
I'll show you a some easy techniques for painting, and finishing your ice age monster, so you can proudly display it at home in your studio.
7BONUS - Sculpting + Photobashing
Watch what happens when we use our own sculptures in combination with the photobashing techniques covered earlier in the workshop!
