LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

Overcast days completely flip the rules of direct sunlight. Instead of warm light and cool shadows, you get cool, diffuse light and warmer shadows. In the premium lesson, I show you exactly how to navigate this lighting scenario on the color wheel. You will learn how to use saturation and hue to shift your color temperatures accurately. I also break down occlusion shadows, which are the deepest areas of shadow where ambient light cannot reach. We finish with a practical painting exercise where we apply these rules to paint a realistic wall in cool light without relying on color picking.

On an overcast day, the sky acts as a giant diffuser, scattering light from all directions, resulting in a cooler, desaturated light. This diffuse light softens shadows and flips the color temperature seen in sunlight, making lit areas cooler and shadows warmer. By sampling colors from photos, Marco Bucci shows how ambient light affects local colors, pulling them towards cooler hues.
