How do you practice drawing anatomy without becoming too dependent on references?

I’ve noticed that when studying anatomy, it’s easy to get comfortable copying a reference but much harder to understand the underlying forms and recreate them from memory. How do you usually practice anatomy so that you can actually understand the structure and draw figures from different angles? Do you focus more on simple forms, muscle studies, memory drawing, or a combination of these approaches?

the way that David finch explained it was to copy one image and then draw it without reference from memory and to do that until you can draw it from memory and then once you can draw it pretty much perfectly from memory then it's locked in your mind, and it would be a blend of all of those

I think you can definitely use a combination of what you've listed here. Being able to simplify the forms can help you lay out an accurate foundation to further detail the anatomical structure, and as you practice you'll have that in your memory for future drawings. Anatomy tracings will help you understand how muscles overlap and work together, and while you may not draw every single muscle on every drawing, building up your familiarity will help you make sure your drawings are accurate and make sense! https://www.proko.com/course-lesson/how-to-learn-anatomy-draftsmen-s1e10 https://www.proko.com/course-lesson/how-to-do-an-anatomy-tracing
