Art tablet?
3yr

Hi folks, I am in need of a new art tablet at this point and I am debating between a Cintiq 16 (Photoshop) or an iPad Pro (Procreate). The primary function for the device will be digitally inking and coloring comic style art (though the rendering will be color not cross hatching). Just wondering if anyone has any input here. Thanks!

I was having the identical debate a couple of years ago before I decided to get my Cintiq 16 pro. I actually started out with procreate when it first started and the apple pencil didn't exist. It's an incredible powerful tool that can be used to produce professional quality art, so I'd never say anything negative about Procreate. Having said that, it isn't the industry standard which is why I decided to go with the Wacom. I can't say that I regret that decision at all. The learning curve will likely be steeper with a Wacom, but it opens up more windows when it comes to experimenting with other programs. Personally, I'm getting into blender and learning to model and animate etc and I'm so glad that I went with a Wacom for that reason. The lack of portability is a downside and it will ultimately come down to what kind of work you're looking to do and where you're trying to take your art.

I currently use a Cintiq and love it. I've never used iPad Pro for work, I only had a little taste of it a while ago by trying it at a store - I'm sure it must be great because it felt awesome, however it was not a worthy choice for me since Apple's pricing is unfair here in Brazil. :˜( But personally, I'm really a fan of working in Photoshop because of how powerful and flexible it is for custom brushes and layer control, as well as its image edition tools, so I'm really not tempted to switch to Procreate, at least for the near future... although it often bothers me a bit that my workstation is not mobile. Not sure if my testimonial helps, but here's two other things I've come to know of recently: . It looks like Wacom has a product which is sort of a "self-powered" Cintiq - it's an art tablet that is a mobile computer in itself, so you can use it without plugging it to a computer: https://www.wacom.com/pt-br/products/pen-computers/wacom-mobilestudio-pro-16 Maybe it is sold in your country? (unfortunately it's not in mine 'sob') . There is now a version of Photoshop for iPad: https://www.adobe.com/br/products/photoshop/ipad.html?promoid=2FDNCKN8&mv=other From what I read, looks like it's not as "complete", so I'm not sure it has all the drawing and painting tools at this point. But it seems Adobe is working on expanding it for the future, so maybe it could eventually become as functional for art as the regular version of Photoshop. Hope this helps somehow!

I had one of the Cintiq Companions "self powered" Wacom Mobile Studios and I would not suggest it. The computer was pretty long in the tooth after 5 years, but the Cintiq screen was still fine. I would have much rather just had a separate Cintiq I could plug into a different computer. Also For me I prefer Mac so PC was kinda not fun for me. Thanks for the Input though. It's a tough decision and both seem to have pretty even pros and cons.

Both have their ups and downs - the wacom is cheaper but needs to be connected to a pc, plus photoshop pricing is pretty outrageous compared to the £10 procreate one off price. I'm just about the make the switch myself, chose to go ipad pro after 6 years windows because I like the idea of a portable workstation and I'm fed up of adobe fees, though I lose some functionality of a windows setup. Either way, from what I've seen both are perfectly capable and should be good for what you need!

Thanks for the feedback. Both seem to have pros and cons. I'm leaning toward Cintiq since it is a bit bigger and I think will be more comfortable to work at for me. Still, that iPad screen and no monthly PS fees.....so hard to choose. I am also considering dropping PS and going with Clip Studio for a bit and see if that can get the job done for me.
