before even thinking about shading, i believe you could first get the proportions down first. you can easily do a comparison by layering it on top of the photo and decrease the opacity of your painting. for the value part, at this stage you could just simplify it down to 2 tones. This way you are forcing your self to think more about the proportions of the subject matter. Though if you want to juggle one more ball than that, you could be more mindful about the design of those shapes. That's it for my critique. hope you'll do well !

Hey Andy. I think that what you are doing is good mainly if you are only sketching, make it looser for the line quality. I just want to say that if you'd like to enhance a bit more solid. i'd suggest limit your self to ONE pose. or ONE box for 15' each. This will help you better than just going from image to image getting all the gesture down (unless that's your goal at this point ) So solid and focus training is the key. Do note that you should also be mindful about the concepts you limited yourself with. for example what Dan B said. try being mindful with just that. You can also break the limit bit by bit by adding more things to think about like the gesture of .. idk a cylinder for example. Hope this help ya !

hey Lee ! in this excercise you mostly nailed the lighting . it seems you did also take in to consideration of the ambient light which is a strong point. though as you can see, i believe where you put the object should also be considered. the 2 bottom right one will show you that the object really isn't in the environment you put them in. You literally just lit the object with the lighting condition you see in the picture. So a good way i think to do this excercise is also to put the object on the ground plane (any ). on that plane you get to i dentify the lighting situation at that specific space in the picture. Here you will also have to think about the type of shadow. do note that it's not only the color and light that is most important. it's also the believability of the whole image. Therefor context is the key. Hope this will help !

How i think about studying . Hi guys, so here is a master copy of Zhao Ming Wu, one of my favourite artists to learn from. I believe limit yourself with just enough information could help you go a far way. for example , in this particular study, i used 1. Sinix video : Digital Painting for beginners In this video , Sinix talks about reducing everything down to only 2 values using only shapes. Therefore, in order for clarity, you'd have to really use your brain to design the shapes of value. 2. Any video about how to use the mixer brush. Looking at Craig Mullins and how he walks on that line between traditional and digital medium, i just had to find out how he did it. It seems like one of the tools he used was the mixer brush tool. I don't care too much about other stuff he used yet. The key point here is still to limit your self, making it easier for you in the long run. So i played with the mixer brush for a while, to get the hang of it. Then i applied it also to 1 : how to see. Basically just to go just a little bit beyond what i have at the moment. 3. Wlop tutorial. The one with aeolien princess pulling the bow. In this specific tutorial, Wlop said that he used the curve tool to color his painting. Honestly, i do not know how he color his painting that way. Specifically i don't really go from grayscale to coloring my piece. But here's the thing, that part when you know what the artists you love use in their work, some of those are only KEY WORDS. I think we shouldn't be afraid to try and look them up and try it our for ourself. We can find our own way of using it. There are NO fundamentals about HOW TO USE CURVES for your painitng in Photoshop. Those are only tools and it's your job to explore how you can use these tools in your creative way. The fundamentals will be crucial for guiding yourself in this maze of information. Learn them (base on what you want to do) and then LIMIT yourself to simple tools so as not to get lost in the youtube rabit hole. That's in for today guys ! i really hope this helps .
