Re-learning art to improve my skills
Steve Lenze
Hey scrappypumpkin, You did a pretty good job separating the values, but they are very far apart. If you squint you'll notice the shadow values are much closer together. I did a quick sketch to show you what I mean, I hope it helps :)

Thank you for the advice! After watching the demo I noticed I needed to add a bit more buffer, and had mocked this up to explain to myself where I had kinda missed, it's good to see it's more similar to your example than my first attempt!

I forgot to mark the Pear as a help request, any feedback welcome!

Okay, I had a bit of a break over the holidays, and I figured it'd just be best to start again since I only did the first lesson anyways Here's my second attempt at the Pear shading demo, and I'd love to get some feedback! Reducing it to 5 shades was harder than I thought it would be, but I'm a lot more confident this time!

Hey scrappypumpkin, You are on the right track. You simplified the shape well and you simplified the values. The one thing I think you need to do more is squint at the reference and compare the value you are using to other values in the reference. For example: the shadow side of the pepper is no where near the same value as the cast shadow on the table. I did a quick sketch to show you what I mean, I hope it helps :)

Wow, these are wonderful! I hope to be able to do that myself someday, glad you decided to share! I'm not very experienced myself, especially with portraits, but if you plan to exaggerate with shapes, I might suggest looking at both cartoon design and caricature, and writing down what features they exaggerate, and how you received it, so you can practice doing it with a purpose?

I'm just starting to get back into art, having enjoyed drawing for most of my life, and a doomed attempt at an art major in college, I dedided to sharpen my skills on my own, while trying to learn digital tools as well. This is my first project, simplification level 1, I'd appreciate any tips or pointers as well as critique of the work if possible! Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help!
