Here are my 3 objects for this first exercise: a boat, drawn from a painting (whose author I haven't found), an old telephone, and an oil lamp, drawn from photos.
These 3 objects share an aesthetic that I like, and that made me want to draw them.
They also bring back childhood memories and emotions.
The boat reminds me of pirate movies and the world of sailors. Adventure, freedom, but also danger, the harsh life...
The telephone is a familiar object from my childhood, associated with a whole host of memories. It also reminds me of old movies: the telephone on the detective's desk in old thrillers. For me, it also symbolizes communication, as long as the line is not cut.
The oil lamp reminds me of the power cuts on stormy nights, the house plunged into a mysterious darkness...
It was a pleasure to return to traditional paper and pencils and immerse myself in my memories!

A practice of the 8 steps method for the drawing with this reference portrait.
Then a new attempt at shading. First the base values with a work on edges. Then I tried to push a little further and tackle the rendering of details, but not across the entire portrait

This was as fun as it was challenging! I really tried to focus on simplification with the markers. Working through multiple iterations of the comp really reinforced shapes and designs so moving on to the larger thumb I felt more confident about the start of the sketch. Going to keep 3 value markers handy from here on out!
Awesome work! I love your shape design and the way you use values to communicate very different moods!

To conclude this wonderful course, a trial of digital shading, focusing on edges. There is still a lot of work to do but I have learned so much thanks to Michael's method!

My value composition thumbnails. That was a great exercise to work on simplification and to really think about composition, about the way to use values to give a particular mood to the image. I had difficulties inventing new original compositions and especially in the use of the background. I will have to get back to it.
I’ve got some big news! My family just welcomed our third child! It was a bit of an early surprise, but we’re all doing great.
Basics students - With this change, the next three months might run a little differently. I’ve built up a backlog of content to keep things moving, but there might still be an occasional gap. If a week goes by without new material, just know it’s temporary. Things will get back to normal soon.
Thanks for your patience as I adjust to life with three kids and gives some attention to my little one. In the meantime, keep practicing, revisit older lessons, or share your progress with the community.
I appreciate all of you. Thanks for being such a supportive group!

For this one I tried to apply a 3 values study according to the volumes of the face. But with hard edges only
