Thank you so much for the critique! I haven't really used the curves adjustment layer much in the past, but seeing it applied to the different color ranges was really neat, I'll definitely test that out on future artwork. I notice I almost always have an issue with my shadows being too saturated on my paintings, so the color range selection tool will be very helpful for keeping that in check going forward. Thanks again for another great lesson!

I had a lot of fun with this assignment, it was interesting to experiment and see how using different colors and lighting impacted the final result. Keeping everything on separate layers definitely helped expedite the process. I ended up painting something similar to the demo and chose a meadow as a background. I also used various blending modes and adjustment layers to change the lighting on the figure from cool lights/warm shadows to warm lights/cool shadows in order to better reflect the setting. Thanks again for another great lesson!

A bit late but I finished my assignment. I followed along with the video and used a similar painting process. I'm fairly happy with the result, though I do think some of the shading (particularly on the fabric in the basket) could be improved, I still have a bit of a hard time getting the image to look as realistic as I'd like. Any feedback would be most appreciated! :)

Here's my assignment!  I painted this scene of the northern lights in order to utilize some of the custom brushes I made in one of the previous lessons. I mainly used normal layers with a couple linear dodge and overlay layers here and there, I also separated the foreground from the background and added a gradient map at the end (set to soft light) to make the colors stand out a bit more. I had a difficult time painting the rocky textures, so the image came out a bit more cartoony than I might have liked, but overall I'm pretty happy with it. :)  I attached the reference image to this post as well. Thanks for another great lesson, I'm also definitely going to invest in that perspective plugin, it looks super helpful.

Here's my assignment! I decided to paint the shaman reference in grayscale to colorize it.  I started by merging the grayscale image to 1 layer, set it to soft light and proceeded to paint the base colors underneath it using normal blending modes.  Next, I created more layers on top using overlay, linear dodge and multiply to add in some extra shadows and highlights (I also used a hue/saturation adjustment layer set to red with a layer mask to paint in the blood).  After that, I used several adjustment layers to tweak the colours and values (mainly hue/saturation, color balance and levels).  Finally, I added one last layer set to normal to add in any extra detail and cleanup the overall image.  I had a lot of fun with this assignment, I haven't had much luck painting over grayscale in the past, but using the right blending modes and adjustment layers really helped the process along. :)

Here’s what I came up with for my blending modes assignment. I had to paint a futuristic bar scene for a comic page I’m working on, so I figured it would be a good opportunity to test out some of the techniques from the lesson. I tried to use the same blending modes as the assignment demo in a similar order. (multiply, overlay, lighten, screen and linear dodge). I also used a metal texture (set to color dodge) to highlight the bar counter which will be the focal point of the panel once the characters/objects are added in.  Im still having a bit of a hard time with my painting looking a bit too digital vs more painterly, but I found that the lighten and screen modes really helped give the image more depth and realism. Thank you for another great lesson! :)

Here's my assignment! :) I chose to paint a screenshot from the film Suspiria. I ended up using quite a few layers to get the desired effect (mostly using normal, multiply, overlay and soft light blending modes). I separated the figure from the background and decided to add colour to the final image (given how colourful the movie is, I couldn't resist). I also used clipping masks in addition to layer masks to help keep the foreground separate from the background.  I have a tendency to be fairly disorganized with my layer structure, so it was good to make a point of labelling and sorting everything. Thanks for another great lesson! :D

Here's what I managed to come up with for the assignment. I picked the intermediate option since I really wanted to try drawing and shading fabric (I don't have a ton of experience drawing drapery from reference). I had a lot of fun painting this and would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thank you! :)

Here's my first attempt at custom brushes, I made one set for painting a space scene and the other is meant for painting the northern lights. I struggled a bit with the northern lights brushes, I had to combine a couple of them to get the desired effect, but overall I'm relatively happy with how it turned out. I do think there's room for improvement with all of these, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thank you for another great lesson! I admit that I tend to gravitate to the same few brushes most times, but learning all these different settings should really help mix things up. I also realized I have way too many brushes I never use cluttering up photoshop, time for some spring cleaning. :)

Hi everyone! Here's my take on the torso drawing. I followed along with Stan as best as I could and attempted to make the image look as if it had been illustrated with graphite (I painted it on photoshop with some textured brushes). Any feedback/critique would be awesome. Thanks in advance!
