Assignment 3 - draw from imagination I drew a character based on the wandering sea anenome - it’s an anenome, when asleep, that looks like a ball of baked beans. This character is curling her tentacles with hair rollers, and passing the time on her waterproof phone.

Assignment 3 sketches a few notes - tried to capture how cranky the penguin looked. Hand was the most difficult - the pinky is off. Correcting placement of the middle and ring fingers helped a little. VR girl sketch I had the most fun with - could have drawn a stronger tilt/imbalance to the stance.

Day 14/14 - mini drawing pads last day! These mini drawing pads are fun to draw on and to draw. Perpsective was a little tricky - looks like the center of gravity is shifted to the right too much. Shadows ground the picture.

Day 13/14 - wire rose difficult to convey that the rose is made of metal wire. If i repeated the piece i would take more time in make the wire thicknesses more even. Draw more wires overlapping/peeking out between wires.

day 12/14 - paper towel drew an old paper towel used to clean up excess acrylic paint. Really liked the color splatter on the towel, so saved it for later drawing references.

Day 11/14 - wall lamp drawing the lamp could be a pretty good warmup excercise, similar to the toadstool exercise that Stan showed us. This lamp is comprised of multiple circles of different diameter - you can add elliptical or circular decorations to the lamp for more practice.

The cat on the right has so much character, the way his head is angled it looks like he’s looking at something outside of the drawing. It makes the viewer wonder what he’s thinking about.

Love the linework and the shading. Really captures the delicacy of the petals.

Assignment 2, levels 1 and 2 Boots (digital) - I found this the most difficult of the pieces and drew this one twice, once digitally and once on paper. Digitally, I did find it useful to draw the laces and the shoe on different layers and in different colors. (I saw someone else use this technique for the assignment.) I like that the lines of the shoes came out stronger, but the laces took too long to draw. Boots (paper) - In this drawing, I treated the laces as a single line instead of outlining them. I used a brush pen to give them some thickness - the shade of the pen was too dark, but treating the laces as lines really helped reduce drawing time and utilize the CSI method more effectively. Snail - I captured a little of the pattern of the snails shell and bumpy skin - just a hint of it to give some textural information. Of the drawings I completed, this was the one I liked the least. Skeleton - I found this easier to draw than the others, because the bones are smooth and not textured like this subjects in the other reference photos. The bones also have definitive edges/lines so the reference photo has been broken down into smaller pieces. Camel - I found it useful to sketch by zooming out on the reference - it helped me focus on the shapes instead of the hair.

Day 3/14 - origami flowers. I folded these a while back and it does make pictures easier to draw when you know how the flower is constructed. Need some work on drawing things the correct size relative to another piece. Got caught up in the details.

Late submission. Pretty happy with the overall results. Took about 3 hours - found it helpful to have a night’s rest before coming back and touching up the picture. Deciding what tones to use on the right hand side of the face was a challenge - I initially used the darkest tone for all the shadows there before deciding to go for the second darkest tone. Looking at the thumbnail image with the reference right next to it, first thing I would change is the highlight on the nose - the highlight along the ridge of the nose is prominent but is much softer on the side of the nose. I do like the shadows on the shirt, although some of the shadows under the collar could be a bit darker. This was the section I spent the least time on, but I like the overall contrast it brings out in the picture. Drew this after watching the critique of the pear and tried to focus on two things from the critique - (1) make the shades where convey coherent shapes and (2) keep the lighter tones in shadows darker relative to the brighter parts of the image.
