added comment inProject - Designing Value Groups
Asked for help
This was fun. I really like wizards and this guy's beard is amazing. I wanted to focus more on shadow shapes and abstracting it a bit and less on realism, but I'm not sure if I went too far or did it correctly or strayed too far from the exercise. I'll redo it if I need to and keep practicing. I feel like I started losing some control at the beard, especially at the bottom. I tried to fade it out to draw attention to the face but I honestly wasn't sure how to design the shapes in that section. I do like how it came out overall, but I don't feel like I controlled or was aware of value grouping as much as I should've been. I did separate light vs. shadow, but the midtones gave me some trouble. This is slightly off topic, but when using a medium like colored pencil where you can't erase, how would you approach background vs character/foreground? I might just need practice or more thumbnails, but final pieces still feel intimidating or like I'm not sure what order to work in when doing larger pieces with backgrounds.

The stoic expression with the flowing beard and explosive background gives this drawing a really cool feeling.
I agree with the previous comment that the background distracts from the face a bit.
You can fix this by adding some clarity to the eye. Even just one shape can pull the focus from the background.

I really like your background! It tends to draw my eyes away from the face, though. I'm constantly looking at these zigzaggy lines in the upper right corner. I like how the colours change there, but you probably want people to look at the face instead.

If I purchase this course now do I also gain access to future videos released for the same course?
Yup! I started when they had only released up to the shapes section and I have all the videos they release as soon as they're released.
