As I continue to work through these, things are starting to get smoother (and easier).

This took me about two hours, with a couple of different swings at the self-critique to see how things were going.

Took another swing with a different portrait. This one only took me an hour to get to this point, so maybe it does get easier with practice! :)

Does anyone have the timestamp (or failing that, the explanation that Stan gave) where then question was asked about having an issue with drawing the shapes “too flat”. I remember Stan saying something about the desire to make things look 3D if the shapes aren’t interesting enough, but I’d like to hear the full explanation again.

Submitting for level 1. It was a lot of fun, but I did find it a challenge not getting too detailed or smoothing out the shapes.

This is done before watching the demo. I wanted to spend more time on this, but family and life demands required additional attention (I’ll hopefully have more time later to do more of this sort of thing). Study was done after Glen Keane.

This was done pre-demo. I decided to try digital in addition to traditional. The order of photos is traditional hierarchy, traditional light/shadows, digital hierarchy, and digital light/shadows. For the second of each pair, I tried following the advice from David Finch (linked by Stan in the comments, responding to someone’s question about the proper way to make a heavier line weight).

Here are my level 1 assignments (all done pre-demo).

Pre-demo, level 1–I tried to stay true to Stan’s instructions: simplify and use curves for lines-of-action and straight lines for structure.

Did another drawing after the demo. I think that my shading is a bit cleaner, but getting the values dialed in is still tough for me.

Finally got to start on this assignment. I think I need to work more on aligning to the value scale (not pictured) and getting the correct proportions.
