Assignment on Master's studies #1
I decided to use a drawing from the Bridgman's Complete Guidance to Drawing from life. The sketch has a lot of dynamism in it and I used Andrew's advice to push the gesture of the pose the most I can. I'm continuously aware of my own improvement and shortcomings and this exercise is by far a great teacher!

I really like this one! gotta love those Bridgman sketches. It feels like the width of the top of the rib cage might be a little thick when compared to the thickness of the waist. but again the proportions feel right and its another great study. Keep it up!

Assignment on Master's studies #2
For the second gesture study, I chose a drawing from Karl Gnass in his book "Spirit of the pose". This was really challenging for me due to the stretching and twisting of the nose itself. I aimed to find a balance in the proportions as close as I could, but the sketch was limited despite its view and the foreshortening. Lots of lessons learned from this study.

Nicely done! a great simplified skull. The eye sockets might be a bit small and could be more angled instead of round, also the mound of the mouth or tooth cylinder a bit large but it's definitely on the right track! well done and keep it up!

Looking good! the structure of the head feels like its working. On this simplified version I wouldn't worry about the eyeballs or the lips but just the eye sockets and the mound of the mouth. The details can distract from the secondary forms that this specific assignment focuses on. Keep up the great work!

I decided to take advantage of the simplified body sculpt and work on it, this is the progress so far.
Thanks to what I learned in the simplified body lessons, I can feel how it's been easier to achieve the posture and establish a good base for the proportions. This has sped up the process, although it's also very different from how I worked before.

Hey this is looking great! I like seeing the structure of the underlying forms and it shows in the more developed sculpt where the structure and anatomy feels solid. Really impressive work!

Looking good. I would try to bring the ear out away from the side of the head more, it feels that it's pushed too flat against the study board. Also trying to get those beautiful forms more soft and pillowy by smoothing out the transitions between forms and focusing on subtlety. Keep it up! It's great to see how hard you're working on the course!

Hi! Love the course so far. Here is my armature assignment. Used 1.2 and 1.3mm wire which is around gauge 16-17. My conversion was 1 inch to 2.5cm / 2.0cm. They are not posed yet. Do they look alright? I know their legs look short on the picture but I swear they are ok lol.

yeah I would double check the proportions and measurements with a ruler. The legs do appear too short and the hips too wide from. The middle one the neck also appears too long and the arms too short. It might help to hold them up to an image of a skeleton on a piece of paper or a person on a computer screen just to double check those proportions as you're going. They look well built though so I think if you can just make those adjustments they should work great. I could also see these proportions possibly working for small children though I'd have to double check that as well. Keep it up!

Nicely done! If I had to give a suggestion I would recommend softening the forms especially those that outline the lips. The lips appear outlined by sharp edges and plane changes but in reality these forms are very soft, pillowy, and they flow into one another. Keep up the great work!

This was the first “Mechanical Head” I carved. The second one I did was a much better face. It was really tough to imagine the eyes without having the stone to actually carve them.

Hi Andrew’s, Far from perfect... it seems to me that the most difficult part of my first experience with sculpture is the symmetry of dimensions and volumes.

Nicely done! I definitely see the forms of the mouth you were going for. The distance between the mouth and nose might be a little long. also the raised form around the lips could be more soft and subtle. Remember to treat the lips and everything around them as soft and pillowy. Keep it up!

Hey Andrew, I made three gestures based on the poses you shared.
They are presented here in the same order I made them. I hate to admit but it's taking me a bit longer than expected and it's due to my work , I have made peace with that.
The amount of knowledge one can acquire from making these subtle gesture studies is enormous, I am sincerely enjoying these exercises and I see the value of keep on doing them.
Moving onto the gestures from the masters!

looking great! If I had to give a suggestion it might be to push the gesture a little more and try to keep these gesture studies thinner especially in the torso (thought the last one looks like you start to do just that). It's great to see your work I hope you can keep it up! I look forward to seeing more.

I have made two armature stands for a 12" armature wire.
I love how simple and inexpensive they can be and yet it seems tedious to adjust if the time comes for that. Perhaps an addition for adjustable rods in different axis would be a great improvement for me. I'll figure something out.

Looking good! you might bend the wire of the hips down a little bit to make the waist a bit thinner and lengthen the legs just a bit (though this may not be necessary if you're sculpting a thicker model with shorter legs) also the loop of the head might be a little large so you might twist it around once more to make the loop a tiny bit smaller. Keep it up! the armature and stand look solid so I'm excited to see what you do with it!

Setting up for reference photos and trying out different lights that I had laying around with a shower curtain diffuser. Used a black blanket as a backdrop. The pictures came out surprisingly well.

My first sculpt since 2017! I'm happy with the results given this is the third sculpt I've ever done. I used Chavant clay instead of dollar brand clay because the stores around me did not have them available. So I thought to spend a little extra on medium oil based clay. The rest of the tools were around the house. A small piece of wood block, a paper clip, a safety pin, and a butter knife! (Took about an hour and twenty minutes).

I can't really find the match in my Internet searches. I use Xiem tools which are similar but with a curved end. Could you give the reference and possibly a link? Thanks
