You never use the words "cast shadow" do you consider it part of the ambient occlusion gradients? very interesting that to you core shadows are not something that we "make" but they happen 'though we probably have to add a bit of dark in the core sometimes I'm sure). I try to use this mode of thinking for cast shadows at this instant: they happen we dont make them... it's sound logic because if the is a cast shadows there is a object blocking the light - which means that very probably there will be a super dark ambient occlusion at the root of it I love this first class and i take tons of notes, it truly changes my way if thinking about values and puts order in what is otherwise a very messy set of concepts in my head. so many thanks!!!
LESSON NOTES
In the first week, we tackle one of the broadest fundamentals - one that you'll be using every time you put down a brushstroke: value! We learn a system of 5 values (with a hidden 6th value) that you can use on every single painting you'll ever do. Along the way, we learn how to simplify the many values you'll encounter in your reference material down to digestible and simple-to-understand groups. These principles are applied to humans/characters, as well as backgrounds and environments.
