It’s time to simplify those snails and boots! I show you how I would do it in these step-by-step demos for the level 1 CSI project. Make sure to check back tomorrow for my level 2 demonstrations!

Boots before and after watching the demo. Still some scratchy lines I need to work on, but I feel like I definitely see imporvement.
@swerveye
This was so difficult. The boots felt like a throwback to an art class in college where we drew a pair of boots for 3 hours. I did the snail twice before watching the demo. I felt kind of mixed on sketching out proportions vs. drawing confident lines. Like how much can I sketch in before I'm missing the point? I'm not sure. It's definitely an exercise I need to do more of. For the boots I got frustrated and after drawing nice lines I colored it in a bit. Kind of ruins the point but I forgot to take a picture beforehand. It was easier after watching the demo - especially the emphasis on how we are currently not trying to replicate perfectly. The proportions of the boots definitely tripped me up initially. And then of course the shoelaces were a pain.

Here are my versions of the level 1 photos. The boots were really though for me, especialy the laces. Any feedback would be welcome 🙂

Project 02: Simplify to CSI Before Demo & After Demo 1) While drawing I look more at paper not subject, which is advised. But while looking at subject more, not feeling confident and fearing of spoiling the sketch

Excellent progress! Keep up the good work!!
@notapirate
Here is my first and second attempt at drawing. (NGL, the first time I drew the boots, I definitely made them look cartoonish, which I kind of like, but the snail, I could have spent more time actually doing it on my first attempt.)

Those are my 2nd attempt on drawing the level 1 references. I did those after I watched the demo and did it on my own, not drawing along with Stan. I definitely felt more confident and comfortable drawing the laces.

Great improvement! I really enjoy your second boots, they look much more organic. I have the feeling I can feel the flow of the zipper opening on the right shoe

loved the snail but I gave up on the boots for now it tripped me much more then level 2 exercises. Those lace made my adhd brain go crazy tried and couldnt do it. Will come back to that one later and I’m finishing my exercise 2 for now ahah. The video really helped thought to understand why I found it that hard

This exercise took me a little over 4h. The boots were a challenge not just because of the straps, but also their perspective. I added some line weight as well. Great exercise, it helped me a lot on how to approach a sketch.

Not at all! :) Love the sketch! Besides we all suck until some day in 15 years when we stop sucking :D

I don’t think so. Proportions are very good! Maybe you put too many information in the shell. Have u already watched Stan’s demonstration video and his critique? He says a couple of things about common mistakes that many students make in exercises like this one. Try again and repost it. I’m sure u will make important improvements 👍🏼 good luck!!

I tried to do this exercise with other pictures.

After The DEMO, I drew the Other Boot. This time i struggled less and the drawing looks better than the previous one. But ill keep practicing.

So post-demo, I tried to do a separate contouring exercise with my own photo. This took me way longer than expected. Mostly because it turns out I don't understand horses at ALL. And this time I tried to adhere much more closely to CSI rules and aim for simplification. It's so difficult to not be distracted by details. Before this course, I always thought the goal was to try to depict absolutely everything you'd see, not to simplify forms. It makes a world of difference, though, to try to keep reminding myself of this now.

Snail and Boots. Spent much more time on the boots, clearly. I slightly adjusted the snail post-demo, but didn't do too much on it. The boots I did not change post-demo. And it shows: the laces don't really make sense, for example. And I think I didn't get the point of the exercise properly. But now I do.
