This is how I begin 'searching' my imagination for an idea. Even if I have an idea in mind already, the composition always needs to be discovered visually. In this method, I essentially 'thumbnail' on the same canvas that will be the final piece.

The block-out can be difficult, but the good news is that this is where you can trial so many ideas in a rough form, before committing to something. Often what we have in our mind will look and feel different when it's physically on the canvas!
