Still learning and creating in all different mediums. Enjoying gouache a lot lately.
@julia_kamenskikh
Hi all, my name is Julia Kamenskikh, and this is my official entry for #prokochallenge organized by @tiffaniemangart and @prokotv Five tiny paintings, all sized by 2 in x 2 in. Painted with gouache and 3/4 in brush. And I think those are the smallest paintings ever done before. And cannot express how much I’ve enjoyed it. You are forced to simplify and it feels like solving a puzzle to me. I will be definitely doing these again, thank you Tiffany for such a great idea and all organizers for organizing this! All photos are taken by me.

First of all, I would like to thank Proco and his team for providing us with this competitive environment. Also thanks to Tiffanie Mang. Thanks to him, I learned to limit myself to small canvases in this challenge. As for the drawings, I divided my canvas into 2" x 2" squares. I tried Tiffanie's suggestion of Infinite Painter as a drawing program, then continued with Procreate. I tried not to be too dependent on the references in terms of color and preferred to use an anti-naturalistic color. I didn't stick to one style. Note: The first reference photo is my mother's youth :) GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! I HOPE EVERYONE LEAVES THE CHALLENGE HAPPY AND EXPERIENCED.

Those are looking great! Less for portrait, but more for figure work, "Freehand Figure Drawing for Illustrators" by David Ross is an excellent resource that pulls from Loomis and others a bit, but it's more using comic book style shortcuts and construction.

My series 'see through', from the windows of cars and from my desk, as I explore my new home. Watercolour, gouache and coloured pencil. Unfortunately I wasn't able to attach the photos these are from so will try and make another post!

Here is my submission! I went with a Magic the gathering theme, reference board attached. Landscapes are of a Forest, Plains, Island, Swamp, and Mountains. I haven’t played the game in ages but I always check out the card art they release with each new set. It is awesome!

I've been trying to find a way to abstract landscapes and this challenge was really fun. Gouache on watercolor paper using a single 12 round brush.

This is really well done. I wouldn't say it's plain, more that it's clean and clear. 👍

I haven't used the brush pen a lot, but I'm really enjoying using it with gouache.

From my personal experiences: One thing I really enjoy is simple cream colored card stock as a Bristol type smooth paper for sketching and quick studies. It's a bit darker than simple white paper, relatively affordable, and sold in packs. I like cutting it in half, hole punching the sides, tying it with string, and making a little travel sketchbook with it. If you want something with more tooth, mixed media paper is really good. I just did a graphite/charcoal on watercolor paper to try it out and I'm looking forward to doing more with it. But definitely try a bunch of stuff to see what works best for you!

I'm still getting into gouache and need to work on landscapes and these are really inspiring, thank you for sharing. I'd love to see your approach to something like a jungle or canyon.

I dig it, you got the shadows and proportions really good. One thing I enjoy about his charcoal portraits is his dark, sketchy backgrounds, I wonder if a dark background would help the figure pop more?

For myself, I find myself going back to Sargent's charcoal portraits. It may be cliche, but his use of both broad, sketchy lines with more precise linework and shading is a real treat to try and replicate, especially with a pencil.
