The Rectus Abdominis – Need to Know

Name: Rectus = Straight, Abdominis = Muscle of the belly
Origin: Pubic crest
Insertion: Anterior costal cartilage of the 5th, 6th, and 7th ribs, and the xiphoid process
Function: Flex the spine forward. When pelvis is fixed, the rib cage moves toward the pelvis. When rib cage is fixed, the pelvis moves toward the rib cage. When neither is fixed, they both move toward each other.
Antagonist: Erector spinae in the lower back
Form: Flat and rectangular. Divided vertically with a center line. Divided horizontally with 3 intersectons. Sometimes a 4th is visible. From the front, the shape is straight with a curve inward at the bottom. On a female, can resemble a violin shape. From the side, can be a B or C shape.

Assignment: Draw the Abs

Your assignment for this week is to do some quick sketches of models in various poses. Make sure to focus on the motion and form of the abs.

Sometimes to show the forms, it might make sense to indicate some tone. But don’t go overboard. The assignment is not to spend hours rendering a single pose. It’s to do a lot of quick studies. Sometimes an indication of a core shadow with the right shape and edge will be enough to indicate the form. If you’re new to shading, don’t shade for this exercise since it will be a distraction.

Post your work in the Anatomy for Artists Facebook group.

Anatomy of the Human Body Course

In the Anatomy Drawing course you’ll learn a lot of advanced concepts for drawing the figure. Focusing on a new level of detail that you would normally see in a pro’s work. After this course you won’t need to guess what all those bumps are. I’ll teach you all the anatomy you need to draw the forms accurately and make them look like real people!

This course is designed to build off of what you learned from the Figure Course. If you haven’t taken that course yet, I highly recommend looking into completing it first. To find out more about the anatomy course click the button below.
